Cyclescheme, ride to work with Rule #65

Rule #65 x Cyclescheme

Save 25% — 39% on a new bike with Cyclescheme

Spread the cost of a new bike, interest-free & with zero up-front costs. Payments are taken for your new ride out of your gross salary. The process is simple, government-approved and flexible enough for you to choose repayment options which suit you.

How does Cyclescheme work?

The simplest explanation is that Cyclescheme acts as an employee benefit, in the form of a salary sacrifice.

This means that you agree to give up part of your salary in exchange for a benefit – in this instance the benefit is a bike and/or accessories. The salary sacrifice is taken from your gross salary (before tax) which means that you will pay less Income Tax and National insurance.

It is worth noting that there is no credit check if you wish to participate, and if you are under 18 you can join the scheme if your guardian signs a guarantor agreement. Being on probation should not affect your eligibility — if you are unsure, please check with your employer.

Cyclescheme have produced a particularly helpful video to help explain this.

How can I save?

Step 1 Get your certificate from Cyclescheme.

Step 2 Choose your items.

You can choose Bikes, Clothing, Equipment and Accessories. Anything that'll help you stay dry (it is the UK, after all), comfortable and stay safe during your ride.

Step 3 Checkout as usual, choosing "Cyclescheme" as the payment method.

Make sure you've spent as much of your certificate value as possible, you won't be able to use it at a later date!

Step 4 During the payment stage of the checkout, enter your certificate & redemption codes, then click the "pay" button.

We'll verify your codes with Cyclescheme and ensure your certificate is valid.

Step 5 Order confirmation!

Assuming your certificate details were valid (and you didn't get too enthusiastic and over-spend on your certificate value — it happens), we'll complete your order (like any other payment method) and depending on your delivery method, you'll be notified when your order is dispatched or ready for collection.

Enter some details into the Cyclescheme calculator below and you'll be presented with your possible savings.

Cyclescheme FAQs

What is Cyclescheme?

Cyclescheme allows you to purchase any bike through your monthly salary sacrifice. The payments are taken directly from your gross salary, whilst also meaning you do not pay any tax, National Insurance, or interest fees.

What is an employer code?

A Cyclescheme employer code is a short alphanumeric code that allows you to log into your employer's customised version of the Cyclescheme website; it tends to look like 'fd45aq'.

You use the code to log in on the Cyclescheme homepage. You do this by clicking on "I'M AN EMPLOYEE".

Then pop your employer code in the 'Enter Employer Name or Code' box and hit "LET'S GET STARTED"

How much can I spend with Cyclescheme?

Most employers choose not to limit the order value with Cyclescheme. This means you can browse a wide range of bikes, including e-bikes, and pair with a number of complimentary accessories. Please check with your employer for any order value limit before applying for your certificate.

Can I add my own funds to the transaction?

You cannot add your own funds to the transaction, this is determined by the guidance from the Department for Transport who have clarified that the entire order value must be included on your certificate and adding funds is not possible.

Can I add/remove/change items from/on my Cyclescheme order?

Once you have applied for the certificate, it is not possible to amend items on the scheme or the order values. We recommend including all eligible accessories on the initial order, including shipping.

How long does it take for the certificate to be approved?

Providing you already have your certificate, after placing the order, it'll usually be approved within 24 hours but it sometimes takes a little longer. It's a pretty seemless process but we must await confirmation from Cyclescheme before getting your new gear ready for you!

Do I have to ride to work everyday?

The simple answer: No, you do not have to commute by bike daily.

The technical answer: You should use the bike and/or accessories mainly for commuting to and, if relevant, between workplaces. At least 50% of the bike and/or accessories use should be for work purposes. For example, if you used the bike 10 times in a year, at least 5 of those journies must be work-related. The bike and accessories can also be used for non-work purposes.

How does salary sacrifice create a saving?

The saving is achieved by paying for the bike and/or accessories directly from your gross salary (before tax). This means your income tax and national insurance are based on your salary, minus the cost of the bike and/or accessories. In turn, this means that your income tax and national insurance are calculated on the reduced amount of salary. Hence, reducing the amount of tax and national insurance you pay is less.

How often can I apply for a Cyclescheme certificate?

You can apply for a Cyclescheme certificate once every 12 months, and in line with your employer's policy.

Can I order more than one bike?

You can order up to two bikes on the same certificate, as long as they are both for you and the intended use of both bikes is for commuting.

What can I purchase on Cyclescheme?

You can get whatever you need to keep you in the saddle and cycle commuting regularly. This includes any type of bike, e-bike or cycle with at least two wheels.

Cyclescheme offers three types of packages:

  1. Bike only
  2. Bike and accessories (the most common choice)
  3. Just accessories
Can I include the cost of delivery in my Cyclescheme certificate value request?

Yes, you should include the cost of shipping.

You can include the cost of delivery in your certificate request value for online partners, allowing you the cleanest and simplest route to completing your order.

Where can I find the cost of the postage for my chosen online retailer?
